News Release

The Defense Commissary Agency operates a worldwide chain of commissaries providing groceries to military personnel, retirees and their families in a safe and secure shopping environment. Commissaries provide a military benefit and make no profit on the sale of merchandise. Authorized patrons purchase items at cost plus a 5-percent surcharge, which covers the costs of building new commissaries and modernizing existing ones. By shopping regularly in the commissary, patrons save an average of 30 percent or more on their purchases compared to commercial prices; savings amounting to thousands of dollars annually. A core military family support element, and a valued part of military pay and benefits, commissaries contribute to family readiness, enhance the quality of life for Americas military and their families, and help recruit and retain the best and brightest men and women to serve their country.

HAPPY 25TH DECA

Oct. 1 marks our agencys 25th birthday. On that date in 1991, the Defense Commissary Agency was officially activated.

On this birthday its worth looking back to see how far weve come, and to consider how we were able to meet so many challenges along the way.

For the past 25 years, DeCA has made many needed adjustments to continue providing the benefit, even as stores closed due to base realignment and closure actions. Our newest stores are state of the art, and our older stores have been upgraded. Industry has supported us with prices that have provided our patrons with great overall savings. Weve also developed new ways of doing business, such as our on-site sales at Guard and Reserve locations for eligible customers who dont live near an established commissary.

Hard as it is to believe today, there was a time when many people opposed DeCAs formation. They feared that once DeCA was established, they might lose control and their benefit might suffer, or that one service branch would control the agency to the detriment of the other services.

But that never happened. From the start, DeCA was a purple agency, not partial to any of the individual services. For that, we owe a great deal to the agencys first director, Army Maj. Gen. John P. Dreska, and a transition team made up of commissary specialists from every service branch. Succeeding directors continued that commitment, enabling the agency to maintain a popular and viable benefit that has continued to thrive.

Weve embraced the challenges of the past and have emerged as a strong, successful benefit for our service members and their families. I am confident that whatever challenges we are faced with in the future, and whatever changes we make, we will chart a course that will lead us to greater success in delivering an even more vital benefit to our customers.

Happy Birthday, DeCA!

Introduced just four years ago, the Commissary Rewards Cards popularity with patrons is only growing with more than 1 million active users as of July 13, according to the Defense Commissary Agency officials. The cards services are available through apps on both Android and iPhone/iPad devices, which makes it handy for on-the-go shopping. The apps also include information on the closest store to the patron and feature promotions and contests tied to the Rewards Cards. Authorized shoppers who prefer to load coupons to their cards from a computer can go to www.commissaries.com/rewards/index.cfm where they can find more information and register their cards.
