Commissaries require face coverings for customers, store employees

Commissaries are requiring some form of face covering for store employees and customers to enter a commissary. The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) guidance applies to all agency stores and other facilities worldwide where no local directive has yet been issued. DeCA’s guidance falls in line with April 5 Department of Defense guidance(link is external) mandating that “all individuals on DoD property, installations, and facilities will wear cloth face coverings when they cannot maintain 6 feet of social distance in public areas or work centers.” Army Lt. Col. Angela Parham, DeCA’s director of health and safety, emphasized that PPE is only one part of the preventive measures required to help combat COVID-19.

“DOD’s face covering mandate aligns with CDC guidance to help prevent asymptomatic people, who may not know they’re infected, from spreading the virus to healthy folks,” Parham said. “Even when you wear a mask or other face covering, it is still important to practice good hand hygiene, social distancing, and refrain from touching your face.” Read the entire news release online.

Commissaries support agent shopping for bases that set up program

The Defense Commissary Agency announced it will support an agent shopping service at local commissaries where installation leaders establish a process to recruit volunteers and connect them with the customers who need this service. “During this pandemic there are some customers who for personal safety reasons should avoid public places and shopping for themselves,” said James “Jay” Hudson, principal deputy director of DeCA’s Store Operations Group. Local store directors have reached out to their installation leadership to let them know about the agent shopping program. This is how the program works: The installation identifies a group to manage it. The installation’s managing group finds volunteers and advertises the program. Then they inform their local commissary that they have established an agent shopping program. Read the entire news release online.
